The City of Groton, a self-governing borough within the Town of Groton, is known as "The Submarine Capitol of the World". It is home of the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics, a firm responsible for the construction of 74 diesel submarines to the Navy during World War II and the construction in 1954, of the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, currently displayed at the Historic Ship Nautilus / Submarine Museum.
Ft. Griswold State Park in the center of the City is the site of the last major battle of Revolutionary War fought in New England, in 1781. The City of Groton was incorporated as the "borough" of the Town of Groton in 1903 and the borough electors designated it the "City of Groton" in 1964.
The City owns it own utility company, Groton Public Utilities, providing electricity, gas, water and cable to residents.
